The village and its components – the peasant, the parental hearth, nature, ancestral customs and traditions, family rituals, etc. – have always been genuine sources of inspiration for the literary works. N. Cârţu is one of the writers for whom the world of the village represents a continuous supplier of narrative substance. The Bucovinian area is the development framework for the author’s more than 40 stories, published in the journal “Cuget Moldovenesc”. This area is represented by the village Bălăceana, the surrounding villages and some life aspects of Suceava, the host of many Bălăcean pupils. The characters of Gh. N. Cârţu’s sketches and memories are hard-working peasants from Bucovina, wise and skilled in the household, or “high school pupils”, eager to learn and unsurpassed pranksters. All of them make the complete “portrait” of the Romanian village from the northern part of Bucovina, generated by a feeling of nostalgia for the past times and places.
