This work represents a theoretical-methodological foray into identifying the possibilities of implementing the model of sustainable university development in the context of the multiple challenges and crises faced by higher education institutions. Thus, sustainability intervenes as a successful lever in increasing the competitiveness of universities. At the same time, the need to focus on sustainability is also highlighted by the pandemic and the energy crisis that disrupted the activity of the entire national economy. On the other hand, universities, as artisans of knowledge, of values in society, are obliged to cultivate the necessity of orientation towards sustainability, but being the fact that universities have the possibilities of cooperation with its stakeholders in this sector in order to identify solutions effective to sensitize society in the need to achieve sustainability. The research methodology focused on the use of multiple research methods such as: analysis and synthesis, induction and deduction, scientific abstraction, comparative method. Towards the end, we can reiterate that universities that claim to be competitive must implement effective managerial models focused on achieving sustainability, focused on the valorization of teaching and research on the theme of sustainability, adapted to the optimal valorization of all resources in order to orientate towards postmodern education.
