One of the central issues in music (and in music education) is understanding music, understanding its content and the message it conveys. The language of the sound art is esoteric. It is full of hidden meanings that require deciphering, and, as such, it is open to various interpretations. "What does music express?" is the fundamental question in this art. For this reason, the semantics of music is an important discipline in training musicians and music lovers who are eager to discover the secrets of this art. The author addresses the issue both from the scientific and from the practical point of view so that the material could be used in institutions of artistic education and, in adapted form, in institutions of general education. The present article deals with the issue from the perspective of its complexity, of the characteristics and aspects of the content of music by exposing various types of semantics and different semantic layers of music depending on various factors. At the same time, it offers data and notions related to this topic, which can be used in different music disciplines in the respective institutions.
