The article studies the antithesis of the images of light and darkness in Fyodor Dostoyevsky’s novel „The Idiot”. The author starts with the polyphony theory and counterpoint thesis that are examined in M.M.Bahtin’s works. The illness of the main character Myshkin is intrerpreted as an aesthetic fact, attempting to identify the artistic nature of the disturbing conditions of the character. The hypothesis of the complicated opposition between darkness and light in Myshkin’s inner world and of his gift of foreknowledge is being suggested.
