dc.description.abstract In linguistics, valency can be defined as the number and type of combinations that the syntactic elements of a sentence can form with one other., i.e. the capability of the verb to take a definite amount and type of arguments/noun phrase positions. It seems that in specialized literature there is no unanimity regarding the issue when and by whom the term valence was used in linguistics first. In this order of ideas, we set the purpose of researching the given problem and to clarify to whom the priority of introducing the concept of valence into linguistics belongs en_US
