The article discusses the peculiarity of translating of Shukshin’s stories into English. Perceiving the text belonging to a foreign culture, the receiver interprets it in images and concepts of their own culture, which is especially difficult in the perception of "village" prose. In the analyzed examples compensatory possibilities of the English language are not used enough, and although the semantics of the original text is reproduced, its connotative shades are not considered, which leads to inadequate translation . The article established differences on the lexical level, which lead to the loss of the author connotation, and the semantic connotations of "lacunae".
