Abstract: The expansion of the Soviet Union has dramatically influenced Romania. The two Soviet occupations of Bessarabia, in 1940 and 1944, have caused two massive waves of refugees – people were abandoning base places hoping to save themselves from communist terrorism. Although the Romanian state has made efforts to help and protect the people, the international and regional circumstances have been at the detriment of Romania. After 1944, the Soviet state began to identify refugees from the Basarabians to „repatriate” them. Many of those who returned in Moldovan SSR were arrested, sentenced to labor camps or deported to Siberia and North Kazakhstan.
