Abstract

The library of the Institution of Higher Education from the North of Moldova was opened in 1945 in the building of the former lyceuum for girls Domniţa Ileana, the present University administrative building. In this study the is proposed: the evolution of the university library during 60 years, the development of collections and the diversification of services for users, the modification of the organisation-functional structure as well as the informational stages initiated in 1989. The strong aspects of the Scientific Library are emphasized, the latter becoming the National Librarianship Center. A special importance is granted to people who contributed to the building and consolidation of one of the most valuable Library of the Republic of Moldova. A special building projected and built for a Library with a collection of more than 1 million documents was for the first time in the history of Moldova put into operation in 1986, on September 1st. The University and Library Community from Balti were very glad and satisfacted spiritually. The author confesses about these special moments and the new conditions acquired by the readers, the books and the librarians in this building with a surface of 6 000 square metres, endowed with modern technic equipment (conveyer, elevators, pneumatic mail, telephone network, and later computers), which facilitated a lot the librarians’ work and improved the quality of the offered services.
